Young Cyclones show improvement in loss to James Monroe
The Eastern View golf team lost its opening match of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling 186-197 to James Monroe at Fredericksburg Country Club.
The young Cyclones, who have no seniors on their roster and feature nine players who are either freshmen or sophomores, were paced by freshman Nathan Amos, who carded a 43 on the day. Sophomore Robert Scott posted a 50, freshman Peter Scott had a 52, sophomore Gavin Utley totaled a 52, freshman Gaige Robson notched a 54 and junior Kelly Hackley finished with a 56.
After two hours of uninterrupted play, the match was suspended for 25 minutes due to steady rain.
Despite the early setback, Eastern View head coach Patrick Thornhill was pleased with how his team performed in its first action of the year, noting that it finished a full 30 strokes ahead of last season’s pace against the Yellow Jackets. The Cyclones had 195 strokes on Wednesday versus 225 in last year’s contest.
“We are a very young team that will be more competitive this year,” Thornhill said of his squad, which finished seventh in the Battlefield District in 2018. “I’m excited to see what we can accomplish.”
James Monroe, which finished sixth in the district a season ago, was led by freshman Grayson Wood’s 40. Senior Noah Adams carded a 41, junior Clare Kingsley finished with a 49 and freshman Wiley Furner-Moore had a 56.
Eastern View returns to action on Monday at 4 p.m., as the Cyclones play a tri-match against county rival Culpeper and visiting King George.
